POI Data Collection
Led cross-functional teams and vendors in Pathein and Mawlamyine to collect over 36,000 POIs, enabling Grab Food's successful market expansion.
Hi, I'm Than Soe Aung, a data analyst with a strong background in Computer Science and proven experience in data collection, preparation, analysis, and visualization. Proficient in Python, SQL, Advanced Excel, and Power BI, I've led data-intensive projects, including POI field collections, automated data workflows, and database optimization, consistently turning raw data into actionable insights and impactful dashboards. I'm a results-oriented collaborator seeking to contribute my skills to a dynamic organization committed to data-driven decisions.
Led cross-functional teams and vendors in Pathein and Mawlamyine to collect over 36,000 POIs, enabling Grab Food's successful market expansion.
Demonstrated strong project management skills by leading "Map Your City" POI data collection projects in Yangon and Mandalay, with the participant of over 100 biker and driver partners.
I managed indoor navigation projects, from initial negotiations with airport and Aung Mingalar Highway Station authorities, through field data collection and data injection, to successful launch in the Grab application.
I've actively sought opportunities to grow my skills in computer science and data analysis. This includes being awarded the Samsung Scholarship(Mobile Application Development), contributing to the Phandeeyar Hackathon, and participating in OpenStreetMap(OSM) Activities. My development has been further supported by relevant coursework and key achievements in my career at Grab Myanmar.
I developed practical data analysis skills using Python through freeCodeCamp's certification program, which included the completion of five projects. You can check via my GitHub Repository
I further developed my Python programming abilities through freeCodeCamp's Scientific Computing with Python curriculum, complementing my previous self-directed learning and computer science background. You can check via my GitHub Repository
I received a Samsung Scholarship that supported my studies in Android application development, offered opportunities to compete with other students, and generously covered all my travel and living expenses during the scholarship period.
I'm committed to continuous learning and recently completed a LinkedIn Learning course on statistical foundations, covering topics such as statistical basics, probability, and working with datasets. You can check in my LinkedIn Profile
I had the opportunity to study JavaSE and JavaEE under the mentorship of Sayar Phyo Kyaw, founder of DigitalFusino POS software, which significantly enhanced my Java programming abilities.
My native language is Burmese, in which I am fully proficient. I have cultivated my English skills since childhood and currently possess an Upper B2 level of fluency. Additionally, I have studied Japanese to the N5 level and am dedicated to further improvement in both English and Japanese.
I was responsible for handling and resolving user feedback from a variety of channels, including Slack, Viber, and Microsoft Dynamics 365. I regularly prepared and delivered presentations to Program Managers and regional teams, providing detailed reports on project progress and actionable insights derived from the data. Furthermore, I collaborated closely with cross-functional teams to understand their data requirements and improve the accuracy of our maps. This involved leading Focus Group Discussions with drivers and bikers to collect valuable feedback.
I was responsible for handling and resolving map related requests from both the Grab Food and Grab Taxi teams. For Grab Food, these requests typically involved the creation of geofences around high-demand areas to enable targeted incentive programs for bikers, prioritizing coverage in Yangon, Mandalay, Naypyidaw, Pathein, and Mawlamyine. I provided similar support to Grab Taxi campaigns by creating geofences to incentivize drivers. Furthermore, I leveraged SQL skills to query the Map Ops POI database and provide other departments with data on high-booking POIs.
I designed and implemented training programs for both bikers and drivers. For the "Map Your City" campaign, this involved training on POI specifications to maintain data quality, including information on incentive structures and the proper use of data collection tools. Recognizing the valuable feedback from Grab Taxi drivers via their designated channel, I provided training on map data and introduced them to OpenStreetMap (OSM) principles to improve the quality and context of their submissions. In addition to these initiatives, I provided training to junior team members on a range of topics, including OpenStreetMap (OSM), POI specifications, map data, QGIS, and other relevant software and processes.
I was responsible for the POI collection process in Pathein and Mawlamyine to support Grab Food's expansion. Managing a team of 7 promoters remotely, I ensured they met their daily and weekly collection targets. Over a three-month period, we successfully collected more than 36,000 POIs. My role also included overseeing the data cleaning, quality control, and weekly injection of this data into the database.
I played a key role in the creation of a Burmese translation model by translating more than 15,000 POI sample data points from English. This project provided valuable opportunities to enhance my English and Burmese language skills, develop expertise in Advanced Excel, and implement Python automation scripts to streamline the translation process. I submitted weekly reports to the engineering team, detailing the translation progress and any obstacles encountered.
I was responsible for the complete management of the Mandalay OSM Map Maintenance Project, including preparing budget quotations for management approval and overseeing the data injection process. I recruited and trained three bikers in Mandalay on how to verify and collect map data in the field. The project resulted in a demonstrable improvement in map data accuracy.
My experience includes managing indoor navigation projects from start to finish, including initial discussions with airport and Aung Mingalar Highway Station authorities, field data collection, data injection, and the final launch within the Grab application. I have also initiated contact with Junction Shopping Mall Group to explore the possibility of implementing indoor navigation within their shopping malls. In addition, I am currently working on developing outdoor navigation solutions for notable landmarks such as Shwedagon Pagoda and the Yangon Zoo.
I volunteered as a game master for our company's 2023 team-building trip to Ngwe Saung Beach, joining approximately 100 colleagues for three days of fun and camaraderie.
My responsibilities included collaborating with other game masters to design and organize a variety of games and activities.
The trip, which was fully sponsored and covered all travel, hotel, and meal expenses, featured group competitions and beach activities on the first day.
On the second day, we had the privilege of attending a "Grab Ways" (culture) training session led by Ma Tresa, the Country Head of Grab Myanmar. She shared valuable insights into Grab's 4H values (Heart, Hunger, Humility, Honour).
The evenings were filled with sponsored outdoor dinner parties by the beach, complete with karaoke and dancing to a DJ.
Our company fostered a strong sense of community through a range of events and activities. Annual pre-Thingyan celebrations offered employees a chance to unwind before the holidays, with food, drinks, and a DJ creating a lively atmosphere.
Monthly Friday parties further strengthened this culture, showcasing the musical talents of our in-house band. Employees could request songs and even perform, making it a fun and interactive experience.
I actively contributed to these initiatives, volunteering as a driver actor in several Grab driver educational videos, available on the official Grab Driver Facebook page. These videos explained app features and updates.
I also participated in the creation of several Grab Food marketing TikTok videos, gaining insight into marketing and creative work. These experiences were enjoyable and provided valuable exposure.
